What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most trusted and widely accepted English language proficiency tests in the world. Recognized by over 10,000 organizations including universities, employers, immigration departments, and professional bodies. IELTS is a key requirement for anyone planning to study, work, or migrate abroad. Countries like the USA, the UK, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, South Korea, Germany, and many others where Nepali students often choose to pursue higher education all accept IELTS scores. This test evaluates how well you can use English in everyday, real-life situations, making it an essential step for your journey overseas.
There are two main types of IELTS tests:

1. IELTS Academic

This version of the test is designed for individuals who plan to pursue higher education in English-speaking countries. It measures your readiness to study or train in academic settings.

  • Listening: 30 minutes – You listen to four recordings of native English speakers and answer a series of questions.
  • Reading: 60 minutes – You read three long passages from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers and respond to 40 questions.
  • Writing: 60 minutes – You complete two tasks: describing a graph/chart/diagram and writing an essay in response to an argument or problem.
  • Speaking: 11–14 minutes – A face-to-face interview with an examiner that includes short questions, a structured talk, and a discussion.

2. IELTS General Training

This version is intended for those going abroad for work experience, training programs, or immigration purposes. It focuses more on everyday English and practical communication skills.

  • Listening: Same as Academic.
  • Reading: 60 minutes – Includes extracts from books, magazines, advertisements, and workplace documents.
  • Writing: 60 minutes – Includes a letter-writing task and an essay.
  • Speaking: Same as Academic.

Test Formats: paper-based and computer-based.

If you’re more comfortable writing by hand, the paper-based test might be the right choice for you. In this format, you'll answer the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on paper, and the Speaking test is done face-to-face with an examiner.

On the other hand, if you're confident using a computer, you can go for the computer-based test. You'll complete the Listening, Reading, and Writing sections on a computer at a test center, while the Speaking part is still conducted in person.

Both formats are equally accepted and scored the same way—you just get to choose the one that suits you best.

Official IELTS Test Conducting Bodies

There are three main organizations that conduct IELTS tests:

  • British Council
  • IDP IELTS
  • Cambridge English Language Assessment
